HBO is moving forward with another Game of Thrones spinoff series, actively developing the long-discussed Aegon's Conquest concept.

The network has partnered with Mattson Tomlin, a sought-after writer known for his contributions to projects like Matt Reeve's The Batman and its upcoming sequel, The Batman Part II. Tomlin has also penned the Keanu Reeves action comic adaptation BRZRKR and is showrunning an animated Terminator series for Netflix.

Aegon's Conquest serves as a direct prequel to the successful House of the Dragon series, chronicling the Targaryen family's violent and tumultuous conquest of Westeros. The narrative revolves around Aegon Targaryen, accompanied by his sister wives Rhaenys and Visenya, as they utilize their dragons to unite six of the Seven Kingdoms in a span of two years. Only Dorne proves resistant to their efforts.

According to one source, the Aegon's Conquest project adopts a "back to basics" approach to George R.R. Martin's expansive fantasy universe. However, given the sprawling and intricate nature of the original series, it's unclear precisely what "back to basics" entails in the context of Game of Thrones. Variety previously reported Aegon's Conquest as a concept under consideration in early last year.

Since the conclusion of Thrones in 2019, numerous prequels (and one sequel idea) have been explored for development, although some are now considered inactive. HBO refrains from completely ruling out any option, as there's always the possibility that a once-promising concept could be revisited under different creative direction.

The endeavors have yielded two greenlit shows: House of the Dragon, set to debut its second season this summer; and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which is slated to begin production this year and is adapted from George R.R. Martin's Dunk and Egg novellas.

HBO declined to provide comment on the matter.

Tomlin, represented by CAA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and Goodman Genow, has demonstrated versatility across different genres. He has previously penned the Jamie Foxx Netflix crime thriller Project Power and served as a consultant on the Oscar-nominated animated film The Sea Beast.Top of Form
