Renowned German director Tom
Tykwer, known for films like "Run
Lola Run" and "Cloud Atlas,"
is set to make his movie comeback with the contemporary German-language drama
titled "The Light" (Das
Licht). Tykwer spent the past seven years working in television, co-creating
and co-directing the acclaimed period drama "Babylon Berlin."

The film is produced by Tykwer's production house X Filme Creative Pool, and it was presented by German distributor X Verleih and international sales rights were picked up by Beta Cinema. The first look of "The Light" features a still image resembling a Renaissance painting, with star Tala al Deen bathed in a radiant glow.
Tala al Deen plays Farrah, a
mysterious Syrian woman who enters the lives of the Engels, a middle-class German
family facing challenges. The family, portrayed by Lars Eidinger, Nicolette
Krebitz, Elke Biesendorfer, Julius Gause, and Elyas Eldridge, is already in a
state of disarray, and Farrah's presence will subject them to an unexpected and
wild test of their emotional world.
Beta Cinema is handling sales for
"The Light" for all
territories except German-speaking Europe, France, and North America. The film
will be presented for pre-sale at the Berlin European Film Market.
Tom Tykwer expressed his excitement about the project, stating, "After quite a long time, which I spent with Babylon Berlin in the roaring 20s, I can finally turn my attention back to our present. In The Light, there is arguing, struggling and fighting, but there is also laughter, singing and dancing. The film aims to challenge the spectrum of emotions and the corresponding narrative possibilities. And the characters are very familiar to me. I want to try to reflect their inner turmoil and make their deep bond tangible for the audience."
"The Light" marks Tom Tykwer's return to feature filmmaking,
with his last feature being the 2016 film "A Hologram for the King" starring Tom Hanks. This new project
is also Tykwer's first German feature since the 2010 film "3." Known for his breakthrough hit
"Run Lola Run" (1998), Tykwer has an impressive filmography that
includes "The Princess and the
Warrior" (2000), "Heaven"
(2002), and "Perfume: The Story of a
Murderer" (2006). He co-directed the 2012 sci-fi epic "Cloud Atlas" with the Wachowskis
and collaborated with them on the Netflix series "Sense8."
"The Light," shot in Germany and Kenya, will have its
theatrical release in Germany on October 17, 2024, through X Verleih and Warner
Bros. Germany. The film is produced by Uwe Schott through X Filme Creative Pool
in co-production with ZDF, ARP Séléction, Gold Rush Pictures, Gretchenfilm, and
B.A. Filmproduktion. It received subsidy support from Germany's DFFF film fund,
the federal film board FFA, and regional subsidies from the Medienboard
Berlin-Brandenburg and the Film and Medienstiftung NRW.
