Mitchell, Cameli, and Stormare will join Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, and Odessa A’zion for this production, which is set to start filming in mid-August.
David F. Sandberg, who recently directed Shazam! Fury of the Gods, is making a return to the horror genre with this project, and he is reuniting with his Annabelle: Creation writer-producer Gary Dauberman.
Dauberman, who holds a first-look deal with the studio, crafted the latest draft of the script and is producing through his Coin Operated banner with Mia Maniscalco, alongside Sandberg and his Mångata partner Lotta Losten. Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment and Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan from PlayStation Productions are also on board as producers.
Released in 2015, Until Dawn is an interactive horror video game that follows eight friends and rivals who gather at a secluded mountain retreat. Facing life-or-death situations with a mysterious killer, cannibalistic wendigos, a cable car, and a historic mining cave-in affecting the present, the group must confront their fears to survive the night.
How the film will adapt the multiple paths and scenarios of the game remains uncertain, but the adaptation is anticipated to be an R-rated, chilling homage to the horror genre, featuring an ensemble cast. Blair Butler penned the initial script.
The specific roles for Mitchell and Cameli remain undisclosed. However, sources indicate that Stormare will reprise his role as therapist Dr. Hill, a nod to the game.
“I’ve been eager to return to horror after Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation. This film delves into various subgenres of horror to deliver the most terrifying experience possible,” Sandberg stated to The Hollywood Reporter. “While capturing the game's essence with new characters, it will serve as a fantastic standalone introduction for newcomers and provide fresh elements that fans of the game will appreciate.”
Michael Bitar is supervising the project for Screen Gems, with Charles Miller serving as executive producer.
Mitchell is widely recognized for her roles on Freeform’s The Fosters and its spinoff Good Trouble, which she also executive produced. She gained prominence through Disney Channel’s Teen Beach movies and recently completed filming the thriller Family Secrets alongside Eric Dane and Tyriq Withers.
Cameli starred in Peacock’s Saved by the Bell reboot and Netflix’s YA drama Along for the Ride, written by Sofia Alvarez of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. He will soon appear in Barry Levinson’s mob film Alto Knights, featuring Robert De Niro, set for release by Warner Bros. later this year.
Stormare, a seasoned actor with numerous credits, is perhaps best known for his memorable role in the Coen brothers’ cult classic Fargo. His notable works also include Armageddon, The Big Lebowski, Constantine, and a role on Prison Break.
Mitchell is represented by WME, Anonymous Content, and Myman Greenspan. Cameli is represented by Stewart Talent, Industry Entertainment, and Hansen, Jacobson.
