In the film, De Armas plays a ballerina-turned-assassin. Officially titled From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, the project has faced a long journey to the big screen. Filming began in 2022, with an original release planned for June 2024.
However, Lionsgate pushed the premiere to June 6, 2025, to give John Wick director Chad Stahelski time to enhance the action scenes. Stahelski collaborated with Ballerina director Len Wiseman to shoot new action sequences earlier this year.
John Wick is a key franchise for Lionsgate, with Keanu Reeves starring in four films since the character's debut in 2014. Reeves also makes a cameo appearance in Ballerina, which is set between the third and fourth John Wick films.
The cast also includes Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, the late Lance Reddick, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Norman Reedus, and Ian McShane.
John Wick: Chapter 4, released in 2023, is the franchise's highest-grossing film, earning $440 million worldwide. A potential John Wick 5 is being considered, with a script by John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum writer Shay Hatten.
