Approaching his series with a
similar approach to Larry David's long-running 'Curb Your Enthusiasm,' the
actor and rapper, Dave Burd, also known as Lil Dicky, is stepping away from
'Dave' for the foreseeable future.
Dave Burd and cast in 'Dave' |
It seems more like a temporary
farewell – a "Bye, I'm Dave,"
for now.
Dave Burd, after three seasons of his FX comedy, is taking a hiatus. It's crucial to note that this is not a cancellation, as those closely associated with the show emphasize. However, there are currently no plans for the return of 'Dave' in the near future.
FX released a statement addressing
the situation: "After some back and
forth, there are no current plans for a fourth season of Dave right now, as
Dave Burd has decided to take an extended break to focus on music and other
ventures. That does not rule out the possibility of doing something in the
future.
We love the
show and sincerely appreciate the creative excellence Dave, Jeff Schaffer, the
cast, and crew delivered with every episode. We are excited that our
partnership with Dave will continue as he develops future projects for us
through his overall production deal with FXP."
It's apt that Dave shared a showrunner with Larry David's 'Curb Your Enthusiasm.' Jeff Schaffer, who co-created Dave with Dave Burd, has a history with the HBO comedy, known for its extended hiatuses — though Curb's 12th run is suggesting it might be its last.
Expressing his sentiments, Burd
stated, “Making Dave has been and
continues to be a dream come true. But there are other creative ventures that I
am dying to pursue as well. For the past five years, I’ve poured every fiber of
my being into the show, and after three amazing seasons, this feels like a good
time to press pause to give myself the bandwidth to do some of the other things
I have always wanted to do. I am beyond excited about what I have planned for
the future and am enormously appreciative of FX for their continued
partnership.”
When Dave debuted in 2020, just a week before the initial COVID-19 lockdown orders, it quickly became a hit for FX. While it may not have reached the same audience numbers as other FX shows like What We Do in the Shadows or the network's future flagship, The Bear, Dave garnered a dedicated online fan base, achieving borderline cult status. Each season boasted an impressive lineup of guest stars, including Drake, Rachel McAdams, and executive producer Kevin Hart. The third season even concluded with a cameo by Brad Pitt.
The show has received recognition,
earning back-to-back WGA Award nominations.
Dave Burd, on the other hand,
released his sophomore studio LP, "Penith,"
in January. This album also serves as the soundtrack for Dave. Debuting at No.
54 on the Billboard 200, "Penith" currently holds the title of the
No. 1 comedy album in America.
