Chris Pine has expressed surprise at the decision to cancel a third instalment of the Wonder Woman franchise. The actor, known for his roles in 2017's Wonder Woman and 2020's Wonder Woman 1984, shared his thoughts with Business Insider, stating that he was "stunned" by the news.

"I'm stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to pivot elsewhere," Pine, also known for directing Poolman, remarked. "I don't know what the reasoning was behind that; it's above my pay grade, but Wonder Woman is an incredible character. Patty [Jenkins] is such a thoughtful director."

Pine portrayed Steve Trevor, the love interest of Gal Gadot's Diana Prince/Wonder Woman character, in the first two movies. However, he clarified that he would not have been involved in a third film.

"Me. No. Homie is dead. Steve is gonzo. It would be ridiculous to try to bring me back," the Star Trek star remarked, referring to his character's demise at the end of the first film. Steve Trevor was resurrected in the sequel when Gadot's character wished him back into reality.

In the same interview, Pine also reflected on his initial reason for turning down the Wonder Woman role.

"I had no interest in playing the boyfriend, and it sounded like second fiddle," explained the actor, known for his role in The Princess Diaries 2. "Then, in talking to Patty, the way she described it was, 'Forget the superhero of it all, this is a romance, this is Casablanca, that's the movie I want to make.' I was like, 'Oh, now that is very cool because when have you seen a superhero film that was a love story, ultimately?' That had nothing to do with blowing shit up."

Wonder Woman 3 was cancelled when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios and initiated their overhaul of the DC Comics Extended Universe.
