After premiering on the Lido, it is set to stream in due course as a Netflix release.
“Joining forces with the Netflix team on this incredible story is an exciting opportunity and I am looking forward to working together again as well. This is my most intimate film to date. A creative imagining and psychological portrayal of Maria Callas, she makes the controversial choice to give up her celebrated life singing for audiences around the globe in order to sing just one song — a special expression from within herself. I am deeply honored to tell this story and share it with audiences around the world much as Maria did in her life.
Inspired by actual events, the plot of Maria will recount the turbulent yet amazing and ultimately tragic tale of one other extraordinary life: brought back to mind — almost invented — in her final days just outside Paris in 1970.
Pierfrancesco Favino (Adagio, The Hummingbird), Alba Rohrwacher (La Chimera, Hungry Hearts) Haluk Bilginer (Winter Sleep), Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog Elvis ) and Valeria Golino Portrait(Lady on Fire Caos calmo).
Script is being written by Steven Knight (Spencer, Peaky Blinders, Eastern Promises) However. Producers: Juan de Dios Larraín for Fabula, Jonas Dornbach for Komplizen Film and Lorenzo Mieli with The Apartment / Fremantle Company. FilmNation Entertainment will sell Maria worldwide.
