The streaming service decided to end the show, a horror-themed spin on the 2010s ABC Family/Freeform mystery, about three months after the second season, titled Summer School, concluded in June.
“While Max will not proceed with a third season of Pretty Little Liars, we are deeply thankful to our co-creators, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring, as well as the Warner Bros. Television team, for bringing fans this fresh version of the liars, who united to face the newest villain terrorizing Millwood,” said Max in a statement.
“Their distinctive, modern creative approach — along with the incredible talent of our cast and crew — offered a fun, horror-filled perspective that honored the original Rosewood roots.”
Season two ended with a hint of future chills, showing a group of girls wearing masks that resembled the five Liars walking through their high school hallway. However, that cliffhanger will remain unresolved.
The Pretty Little Liars reboot received a straight-to-series order in September 2020, back when the platform was still HBO Max. The first season, titled Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, premiered on July 28, 2022, and was renewed for a second season shortly after its finale.
The second season starred Bailee Madison, Chandler Kinney, Zaria, Malia Pyles, Maia Reficco, Mallory Bechtel, Sharon Leal, Alex Aiono, Jordan Gonzalez, and Elias Kacavas.
Aguirre-Sacasa (Riverdale) and Bring were executive producers alongside PLL creator Marlene King, Leslie Morgenstein, Gina Girolamo from Alloy Entertainment, and Michael Grassi.
TVLine was the first to report the cancellation.
