James Spader is making a comeback in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Emmy-winning actor will once again lend his voice to the menacing robotic villain, Ultron, in Marvel Studios' upcoming Vision series. This follow-up to the acclaimed WandaVision marks Spader’s return to the role he first portrayed in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Paul Bettany is also set to return as Vision, the android who developed a deep connection with Scarlet Witch before being destroyed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. In WandaVision, Vision was revived through a mix of magic and grief, but also reappeared as a rebuilt, ghostly white version of himself.
Terry Matalas, the celebrated showrunner of Star Trek: Picard, is leading Marvel's upcoming series, currently known as Vision Quest (unofficial title). This new series explores the white Vision's journey to discover a new purpose in life.
In a twist that will excite Marvel fans, James Spader's Ultron is returning. Originally created by Tony Stark as a defense program, Ultron rebelled and tried to destroy humanity in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Before Vision gained consciousness, Ultron created his body, but the Avengers ultimately claimed it. Vision became a unique entity, neither Ultron nor J.A.R.V.I.S., thanks to a combination of Bruce Banner and Stark’s A.I.
Although Ultron appeared to be destroyed in the film, his comeback in this series raises questions about his relationship with Vision. The series is part of a trilogy that began with WandaVision and will continue with Agatha All Along, set to premiere in September on Disney+. Filming is expected to begin in England in early 2025.
James Spader, an actor with an extensive career spanning film and television, gained fame in movies like Sex, Lies, and Videotape and Pretty in Pink. His TV roles include the award-winning Boston Legal, The Office, and his iconic creepy character in The Blacklist, which aired from 2013 to 2023.
