The streaming platform has renewed the drama for a second season, with Colin Farrell reprising his role as Detective John Sugar. The first season centered around John's quest to find a missing woman and concluded with a major twist that sets up the next season.
“We’re thrilled by the global response to Sugar and excited to continue the story in season two,” said executive producers Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg. “We’re immensely thankful to Apple, our showrunner Sam Catlin, the outstanding Colin Farrell, and our viewers. We can't wait for John Sugar to tackle his next case.”
Matt Cherniss, head of programming at Apple TV+, added, “Since its debut, Sugar has captivated audiences with its mysteries and Colin Farrell’s standout performance. Colin, Simon Kinberg, Audrey Chon, and the entire team have expertly blended genres, creating an unmissable series full of surprises. We're excited to see what season two holds for Detective John Sugar.”
The first season aired in April and wrapped its eight-episode run on May 17. According to Apple, the second season will take Sugar back to Los Angeles for another missing-person case, while he continues his search for his missing sister.
Farrell, who is also an executive producer on Sugar, currently stars in two high-profile series, including The Penguin on HBO, which has attracted large audiences with its first two episodes.
Season one of Sugar featured performances from Kirby, Amy Ryan, James Cromwell, Anna Gunn, Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry, Sydney Chandler, and Alex Hernandez. It’s not yet confirmed whether any of these actors will return for season two.
Sam Catlin (Breaking Bad, Preacher) will serve as the showrunner for the second season and executive produce through his Short Drive Entertainment. Chon and Kinberg, who has a deal with Apple TV+, will also executive produce through Genre Films, alongside Farrell, Scott Greenberg, and Chip Vucelich. The series was created by Mark Protosevich.
